Exit the BART station and pedal across the freeway interchange to hook up with the Delta DeAnza Regional Trail. Transfer from the paved trail to a dustier trail when you enter Contra Loma Regional Park, and then begin to climb towards Black Diamond Mines. The trail will rise and fall over the hills, you’ll ride past Rose Hill Cemetery. A nice descent on Black Diamond Trail will pop you out in the town of Clayton.
In the town, top off your water bottles and then head south on roads for a little bit around Mt. Diablo. After a small dirt detour, you’ll find yourself on Morgan Territory Road, which is generally deserted. Then a dirt path will present itself that will take you up and around the backside of Mt. Diablo.
Morgan Creek Road generally has good tree coverage from the oak and bay trees, which will help protect you against sun and heat. There are two distinct summits, the second one being taller. Try to enjoy the ride! It can get hot and steep out there.
After the second summit, the trail generally runs along one of the many shoulders of Mt. Diablo -there are some fun downhill moments mixed in. Eventually, you’ll return to the pavement on South Gate Road near Rock City for a short bit, but you’ll quickly rejoin the refreshing dirt of Wall Point Road for a memorable descent. You’ll pass through the Diablo Foothills and Shell Ridge areas before ending your ride in Walnut Creek.
